Famous Renaissance Artist : Michelangelo
Michelangelo(1475-1564)was born to a bander's family in the Itanlian city-state of Florence on March 6, 1475. Florence was one of the Renaissance centres. Michelangelo wanted to be an artist. Yet his father did not agree. Only children of poor families would become apprentices. Despite his father's objections, he became an apprentice at the age of 13. At this time, most apprentices were aged five or six. They had to learn from their teacher probably for 15 or even 20 years. Never was there a person like Michelangelo who became an apprentice at such an 'old' age as 13.

His teacher named Ghirlandajo was the most famous painter of Florence at the time. Michelangelo should have served his teacher for three years. Yet he left after one year. Do you know why? This was because he had nothing to learn from his teacher after one year. You can see how talented he was. No wonder many people think that he is one of the greatest artists of all times.

He died at 89 in 1764. During his lifetime, he made many famous works.
Michaelangelo's Famous Painting~
The Creation of Adam, part of a huge painting painted by Michelangelo on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.
Michaelangelo's Famous Sculpture
This David was sculpted by Michelangelo, between 1501 and 1504. This David, unlike others, shows him waiting for Goliath,
instead of victorious after battle.

Michelangelo's DAVID originally stood in front of the Palazzo Vecchio at the beginning of the sixteenth century,
as the symbolic guardian of the liberty of the Florentine Republic. In 1873 it was moved to the Galleria and was
replaced by the copy which now stands in its original location.
